The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to Australian Aboriginal art.
On Friday, May 18th, an exhibit called “People of Substance” opens and will continue through August 26th, 2012. It is by an artist of Chinese and Aboriginal heritage named Jason Wing.
The exhibition focuses on the universality of substance abuse – alcohol and tobacco included. It explores the idea that in Australia, substance abuse is a result of colonization and the ongoing, systemic oppression of Aboriginal people. The artist practices art therapy among marginalized and disadvantaged communities, and so is not coming to this issue as an outsider.
