The Bridge PAI presents “What’s Cooking in the Kurdish Kitchen,” a show of black and white and color photography taken by Ben Ward, from the world’s first sociopolitical cookbook on the subject of Kurdish people in Turkey.

Ben is a Charlottesville native and UVa grad. He is a self-taught photographer who drew the attention of renowned sociologist/resettlement expert Dr. Ayşe Kudat for his artistic talent, keen eye and compassion for the human condition.  Their collaboration led to these images, featured in their cookbook.

The exhibition is up at The Bridge until November 26th.

On Saturday, November 12th, at 8 pm, Double Image Theater Lab will perform “A Chance Shadow” at The Bridge PAI.

Using the works of poets Xu Zhimo and Frederico Garcia Lorca they will “create a language of non-verbal shadow theater by using moving images accompanied by music.  We encourage the audience to travel on a journey with us, creating their own story through the use of their imaginations as they witness the poets’ experiences of war and separation and their struggle for love and freedom.

We use high luminance LED flashlights to create sharp and focused images. Without
electrical cords, we have the freedom to choreograph images moving between objects,
performers, and the projected surface. In addition to being the light source, the flashlights
will become characters themselves through manipulation by the puppeteers. Instead of
using a flat white screen, we experiment with different objects as our projected surface,
for example; umbrellas, fans, paper panels, ceilings, costumes etc. Our purpose is to give
the shadow images different textures thereby creating a multidimensional world where
images are constantly in motion. Also, by placing the performers on opposite sides of the
projected surface we are able to create a fade in and fade out effect which adds to the
drama of the performance.

Can you outrun a zombie? (Even the fast ones?)

Now’s your chance to try. Better tie your shoelaces.

Amoeba Films and the Filmmakers Republik proudly present:
THE 2ND ANNUAL DANGER ZOMBIES 5K RUN
Main Street Arena, Charlottesville, VA
Sunday, October 30th at 8:30AM

They came back! And they’re eating more than carbs. Join one of two groups: runners and zombies. Runners will get a 90 second head start before we release the zombies. Undead get points for “kills.” Runners get points for living to the end of the race. Prizes to be awarded at the race’s bloody end. The planned route will start at the Main Street Arena, run through the Charlottesville Downtown Mall to the end of Woolen Mills and end at the Free Speech Monument.

To participate, you must be willing to sign a release to be filmed. Footage from this event will be made into a short video. Also, media will be there. So keep your pants on.

Register now, before it’s too late!

We can only handle so many zombies. Zombie Runners must arrive in makeup — or register for the Zombie Runner Deluxe which includes a professional zombifying done before the run by a local make-up artist (must arrive at 7 am)

Portions of the proceeds will go to fund the local art initiative with The Bridge.

Other portions will help future Filmmakers Republik collaborative projects.

SEE THE FILM MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 7PM

The award-winning feature film DANGER. ZOMBIES. RUN. will be shown at the Paramount Theater at 7:00pm on Monday, October 31st. This will be screened as part of a double feature with Mantra.

The Charlottesville Mural Project is a collaborative project between The Bridge PAI and CommonPlace Arts, in partnership with the The IX Complex. Drawing inspiration from Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program and similar initiatives, we hope to showcase the talents of artists and designers while creating a more interesting visual landscape in the city.

As part of the Charlottesville Mural Project, individuals and organizations are invited to submit original design proposals for a mural that will be painted on the side of a large building at The IX Complex, facing Monticello Avenue. Participation is not limited to residents of Charlottesville. Artists are strongly encouraged to visit the building site before creating design proposals. The wall is approximately 3,160 square feet (measuring 158′ x 20′).

Entry Requirements:

1. Submission Cover Sheet (which can be found here)

2. Original designs only. Submitted design images cannot be returned. Digital images should be formatted as JPGs at 72dpi and may be submitted on a CD or through email. Each file should be labeled with artist’s name and a number (example: Smith_Jane_01.jpg). Printed images should be labeled and clipped to the Submission Cover Sheet.

Entries can be emailed to commonplacearts [at] gmail.com or delivered by mail or in person to:

Charlottesville Mural Project
c/o The Bridge PAI
Attn: Sarah Lawson
209 Monticello Road
Charlottesville, VA 22902

All entries must be received by 11:59pm on June 1, 2011. Incomplete or illegible submissions will not be reviewed. A jury will review all entries to pick one winning design. Artists are strongly encouraged to visit the site before creating design proposals.

Artwork will be selected based on creativity and artistic merit as well as the feasibility of recreating it on a large scale. Since the wall is made of a corrugated metal, simple designs will be more successful than intricately detailed ones. A winner will be announced on June 15, and the mural installation process will begin in July 2011. The selected mural design will be painted by an independent artist.

Jury Committee: Andrew Greeley, Maggie Guggenheimer, Greg Kelly, Fabian Kuttner, Sarah Lawson, Ross McDermott, Lindsey Mears, and Mayor Dave Norris.

For additional information and images, please visit Charlottesville Mural Project online or email Sarah Lawson at commonplacearts [at] gmail.com.
