This unlikely rock band– using just mandolin, violin, cello, standup bass, and drums– create explosive pop that upends notions of what these instruments can do. ”Makes me want to run around in a field screaming… I love this band!” -NPR music

New City Arts Forum: April 20th-22nd at the Haven.
While the landscape of the arts community is always changing, many questions remain the same, questions such as What is the responsibility of the artist? and What is good art? New City Arts has organized an April forum to engage both the newly emerging and the perennial issues—of art, city, and society—faced by artists as they pursue their curious vocation. We have invited top-notch presenters and paired them together based on their expertise, interests, and relationships. As you visit exhibits and attend performances, you will experience, not just hear about, great artwork. (And there will be a fancy, secret dinner in beautiful downtown Charlottesville.)
We invite you to join this conversation and this community. Come listen as practitioners and philosophers address contemporary questions of our collective, creative world, and become part of a still-forming community that seeks to be attentive to the life and profession of the artist.
Look here for our schedule, and here for more information about the presenters, which include: Dean Dass, Howard Singerman, Nicholas Wolterstorff (author of Art in Action), Dan Siedell (author of God in the Gallery), a representative from the National Arts Endowment, the CEO of National Arts Strategies, and performances with Benjamin and Isaac Wardell.

The TFS 8th grade production of Godspell Jr., directed by Lydia Horan will perform at:
THE HAVEN Sanctuary at 112 West Market Street on Sunday, November 20th at 2pm.

“Godspell, one of musical theatre’s most playful and innovative shows which became the voice of a generation sick of war and looking for solace in the peace of scriptural teachings, draws from a variety of theatrical devices including clowning, storytelling, vaudeville and song.” It embraces the importance of community and the sense of responsibility we all have to our fellow human beings. Conceived by John-Michael Tebelak and with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
We invite the entire community to join us for this exciting performance and be a part of “giving” to our community. Bring a canned good to donate to our onstage “Beautiful City” sculpture. Cans from all shows will be given to the shelter.

On Saturday, April 16, from 9 AM- 2 PM, New City Arts and AIA Central Virginia will host a design charrette for an ‘imaginary city’ at The Haven (112 W. Market St) during Charlottesville’s Architecture Week.
A handful of Haven guests will write and draw new designs for their ideal piece of public infrastructure (a transit system, a park, a community center, the street lights, and a bridge.) A handful of architects, committed to the idea of “Community” for AIA’s Architecture Week, will meet with guests to draw up models and further visual representations of these ideas.
Coffee will be provided by Mudhouse. Lunch will be provided for participants and volunteers by Eppies. The charrette is limited to selected guests, architects, and volunteers.
On Friday, May 6, from 5-7 PM, all writings, drawings, and models from Haven guests and architects will be on display for First Fridays at the WVTF and Radio IQ Studio Gallery (216 W. Water St.). This exhibit will be free and open to the public.
For more information on how to be involved, contact Maureen at artsdirector [at] newcityarts.org or Elizabeth Rhodes at elizabeth [at] aiacentralva.org.

New City Arts and The Garage bring you The Welcome Wagon on March 28 at The Haven at First & Market.
The Welcome Wagon is led by married couple, the Reverend Thomas Vito Aiuto and his wife Monique, who execute a genre of gospel music that is refreshingly plain. According to Paste, “like many [Sufjan] Stevens-related Sounds Familyre artists, the influence of Testaments (both old and new) glimmers only with a folk-pop veneer—in this case a parlor guitar, a plastic glockenspiel and, of course, some many-tenored arrangements.”
Given their already established relationship with Brooklyn Jubilee, a portion of Welcome Wagon’s proceeds will benefit The Haven, a safe and welcoming place for the homeless and very poor of Central Virginia to be during the day.
Nettles will start things off at 8 PM. Doors will open at 7 PM. Tickets are $10 (cash or check only).
The Haven is located at 112 West Market St., on the corner of 1st and Market St.– across from the Hill and Wood Funeral Home. Parking is limited but available (just give yourself some time to find it.)
